Inflammatory Marker sTREM-1 Reflects the Clinical Stage and Respiratory Tract Obstruction in Allergic Asthma Bronchiale Patients and Correlates with Number of Neutrophils

Abstract: The knowledge that asthma is an inflammatory disorder has prompted us to investigate the plasma levels of a new inflammatory marker sTREM-1 that is released from the surfaces of activated neutrophils and monocytes. The plasma levels of sTREM-1 were analysed by a sandwich ELISA test in the cohort of 76 patients with allergic asthma bronchiale and 39 healthy controls. Our results revealed more than 3.5 times higher levels of sTREM-1 in AB patients (92.3 pg/mL ± 125.6) compared with healthy subjects (25.7 pg/mL ±… Show more

“…Moreover, Bucova and coworkers (34) observed increased protein plasma levels of TREM-1 among adults with more severe allergic asthma, especially among those experiencing acute exacerbations. Relatedly, indoor endotoxin exposure is also a strong risk factor for asthma exacerbation (35).…”

“…The membrane form of TREM-1 can be cleaved into a soluble form, sTREM that is released into microenvironment (Gomez-Pina et al, 2007). While, high levels of sTREM-1 have been found in patients with severe forms of allergic asthma (Bucova et al, 2012), it has been suggested that sTREM-1 may have an antiinflammatory role, by acting through a mechanism whereby sTREM blocks interactions of membrane-bound TREM-1 with its natural ligand in a way similar to the recognized interaction between the soluble form of the TNF-α receptor and membrane TNF-α receptor (Gibot and Massin, 2006; Science Publications -Bourboulis et al, 2008). Furthermore, it has been suggested that sTREM could be used as therapeutic for inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis (Kim et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2012).…”

“…Levels of sTREM-1 correlated with the number of leucocytes and the absolute number of neutrophils. Elevated plasma levels of sTREM-1 refl ected the severity, state of exacerbation, presence of respiratory tract obstruction in AB patients and together with an increased number of neutrophils pointed to the role of neutrophils in infl ammation accompanying AB (10). Both these studies were the fi rst, which analysed the BALF sTREM-1 levels in patients with PS and plasma levels of sTREM-1 in asthma bronchiale patients.…”

“…An increased TREM-1 expression on the surface of myeloid cells occurs in the presence of extracellular bacteria, fungi and their products (6,7,8). Increased TREM-1 expression and increased levels of soluble TREM-1 accompany both infectious and non-infectious infl ammatory processes (9,10). TREM-2 is involved in cell fusion and granuloma formation, the typical sign of sarcoidosis (11).…”
