Inflammatory Mechanism of Brucella Infection in Placental Trophoblast Cells

Abstract: Brucellosis is a severe zoonotic infectious disease caused by the infection of the Brucella, which is widespread and causes considerable economic losses in underdeveloped areas. Brucella is a facultative intracellular bacteria whose main target cells for infection are macrophages, placental trophoblast cells and dendritic cells. The main clinical signs of Brucella infection in livestock are reproductive disorders and abortion. At present, the pathogenesis of placentitis or abortion caused by Brucella in livest… Show more

“…In the third semester, the group of animals with a history of abortion had a higher seropositivity ( Tarusikirwa et al ., 2023 ). The presence of erythritol, a growth stimulant for B. abortus , increases the susceptibility of cows to Brucella infection, especially in early pregnancy, and the condition can result in late-term abortion ( Xiao et al ., 2022 ). Following the initial abortion, the animal is capable of giving birth without any issues.…”

“…The uterus, epididymis, breast tissue, and fetus of animals all have high quantities of erythritol ( Carvalho et al ., 2023 ). Furthermore, progesterone produced by the placenta promotes Brucella growth in vitro ( Xiao et al ., 2022 ). High quantities of germs are found in the secretions of these tissues; these concentrations are highest in the vagina soon following an abortion or childbirth ( Cosford, 2018 ).…”

“…In the initial stage of infection, macrophages, trophoblastic cell (TE), and other phagocytic cells are the main targets of Brucella infection ( Xiao et al., 2022 ). For Brucella , they are not only the sites for both survival and replication but also a vehicle for transmission to other organ systems.…”

“…Given the known relationship between placentitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes in several gestational infections [6], a role for placental inflammation in Brucella-induced abortion and preterm birth has been suggested [7][8][9]. While the inflammatory response of trophoblasts to Brucella has been recently reviewed [10], here we review epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of Brucella-induced pregnancy complications and analyze the ability of the pathogen to infect and replicate in different cell types of the maternal-fetal unit and induce inflammatory responses that may lead to such complications.…”
