Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the kidney with viral hepatitis B and trauma: A case report

Abstract: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare entity that most commonly involves the lung. However, an IMT of the kidney is extremely rare. The etiology and pathogenesis of IMT remain unknown. The present study describes the case of a 48-year-old female who presented asymptomatically. Imaging investigations revealed a mass in the left kidney and a pathological examination of the nephrectomy specimen revealed an IMT. The patient had a history of trauma in the left hypochondrium 13 years previously and a hi… Show more

“… 8 11 Trauma and chronic hepatitis B infection are also thought to play a role in tumorigenesis. 12 ALK gene rearrangement has been confirmed in some IMTs, suggesting that ALK rearrangement is correlated with tumor progression. 13 Interestingly, the patient in our report had hepatitis B infection without persistent chronic infection; also, she had a history of trauma to 2 limbs without trauma at her left waist.…”

“…Infection has been considered as a significant factor in the initiation of IMT, and several bacteria and viruses have been associated with the development of IMT, including Epstein-Barr virus, human herpes virus, Bacillus sphaericus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (6). Recently, Li et al (7) described the case of a patient with IMT of kidney, who presented a long-term history of hepatitis B. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that hepatitis B may lead to the development of IMT.…”

“…Some microbiological infections, such as mycobacteria, viral hepatitis B, Corynebacterium , Epstein-Barr virus, and human papillomavirus, may also play a potential role in the formation of IMT. [ 2 3 ] It may also be associated with the history of bladder trauma, application of steroid drugs, and placement of polypropylene mesh (TVT) surgery. [ 4 ] Third, the occurrence of IMTUB may be correlated with the overexpression of cyclin D1, mouse double microbody 2, interleukin-6, human herpesvirus 8, and p53.…”

“…Finally, trauma, vascular causes, and autoimmune disorders have also been proposed to play a certain role. [ 3 ] In this case, recurrent urinary tract infection may represent an inciting event of IMT. However, the bladder tumor can cause obstruction of the lower urinary tract, followed by secondary infection, which shows symptoms of urinary irritation.…”
