Inflating Shallow Plumbing System of Bezymianny Volcano, Kamchatka, Studied by InSAR and Seismicity Data Prior to the 20 December 2017 Eruption

Abstract: Explosive eruptions at steep-sided volcanoes may develop with complex precursor activity occurring in a poorly-understood magma plumbing system so that timelines and possible interactions with the geologic surrounding are often unresolved. Here we investigate the episode prior to the energetic December 20, 2017 eruption at Bezymianny volcano, Kamchatka. We compare degassing activity inferred from time-lapse camera images, seismicity and real-time seismic amplitude (RSAM) data derived from a temporary station n… Show more

“…Lastly, we see a marked velocity increase accompanied by a decorrelation of the noise correlation functions at Bezymianny Volcano commencing 6–7 February 2016, shortly after the Zhupanov earthquake. The velocity increase occurs together with a first uplift marking the beginning of the 2016/2017 eruption cycle (Coppola et al., 2021; Mania et al., 2019, 2021). We argue that the inflation of a shallow gas, magma, or hydrothermal reservoir could cause localized velocity increases and decreases.…”

“…(2021) has revealed a complex relationship between the major volcanoes of the KVG and a potential modulation by tectonic triggers. At Klyuchevskoy and Bezymianny, a period of unrest commenced in 2016, accompanied by eruptive activity (Journeau et al., 2022; Mania et al., 2019, 2021). For Bezymianny Volcano, Mania et al.…”

“…Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is therefore a unique method to track dome growth and deformation, as radar microwaves penetrate clouds with little interference, therefore allowing imaging independently of cloud cover, volcanic steam or ash obstructing the view. Although interferometric processing (InSAR) has been widely used to quantify volcano-wide deformation 25 or even summit deformation 26 , 27 , the small spatial extent of domes and their tendency to be incoherent in InSAR imagery (due to rapidly changing surface and morphology) have made this technique less suited for studying lava dome emplacement. Instead, the reflected SAR intensity has been used to track the dome and crater morphology 21 , 28 31 .…”
