“…A randomized trial of ten patients who overdosed on phenobarbital reported a profound reduction in serum phenobarbital half-life, but no change in time on mechanical ventilation or the time in the hospital between those receiving a single dose of AC or MDAC [100]. In contrast, 12 patients with confirmed carbamazepine poisonings were randomized to receive MDAC or a single dose of AC [101]. Though peak carbamazepine levels were similar, the duration of coma was significantly decreased ( P = 0.02) as were the hours on mechanical ventilation ( P = 0.001) and the length of hospital stay ( P = 0.00001) with MDAC.…”

“…For patients presenting with or eventually absorbing enough to have excessive concentrations, enhancing elimination via multiple doses of activated charcoal (MDAC) has proven to reduce enterohepatic recirculation of carbamazepine and thus reduce elimination half-lives. 7 Repeated doses of AC also have the capacity to clean or mop the gut of concretions and bezoars that may be responsible for the erratic absorption. 8 In rare and severe poisoning, because carbamazepine is amendable to hemodialysis, aggressive enhancement of elimination via this technique may also be entertained.…”

“…It is unquestionable that carbamazepine is one of the few poisons for which there are conclusive answers about the effectiveness of activated charcoal both in preventing absorption and improving clinical condition that are based on evident clinical studies [16,[31][32][33].…”

“…Hence, we felt it timely to study the quantity of seromucosal transport, excretion into bile and urine and some pharmacokinetic parameters of 14 C-carbamazepine after intravenous administration to rats. As a recent publication clearly affirms the effectiveness of multiple-dose activated charcoal treatment of carbamazepine poisoning in human beings anew [16], we were especially interested in an additional effect of orally administered activated charcoal to increase the clearance of seromucosally transported carbamazepine.…”
