Influence of Ag Nanoparticles for the Anti-wear and Extreme Pressure Properties of the Mineral Oil Based Nano-cutting Fluid

Abstract: The cutting fluids are widely used to reduce the temperature and friction between the tool and work piece in the metal cutting processes. This work investigates the enhancement in the tribological properties of the mineral oil (MO) based cutting fluid with the inclusion of silver nanoparticles. The nano-cutting fluid was prepared by adding various proportions of silver nanoparticles in the mineral oil based cutting fluids. The extreme pressure properties and wear preventive characteristics of the nano-cutting … Show more

“…Therefore, the presence of Ag element indicates the AgNPs were deposited on both worn surfaces [26]. This result confirmed formation of tribofilm on the contact area between ball and substrate materials [35,50,51]. And it might be said that tribofilm was occurred on a large surface instead of partial regions for Oil-Ag@Ctr and Oil-Ag@Pva lubricants [52].…”

“…Table 7 compares the results obtained from the study with existing studies conducted on fully formulated oils and chemically modified bio-oils. [26][27][28][29][30][31][32] It is concluded that avocado oil mixed with ZDDP is a serious candidate for the replacement of petroleum-based mineral oils.…”

“…During tribological interactions, Ag nanoparticles form a thin tribofilm layer on the wear surfaces [60] (both cutting tool and workpiece). This tribofilm mechanism was found to be responsible for improving the tribological characteristics of the nanoparticles incorporated metal working fluids [61]. The Ag nanoparticles present in the metal working fluids tend to fill the wear cracks [62].…”
