Influence of Ambient-Air Nitrogen on the Argon Plasma Generated by a TIAGO Torch Open to Atmosphere

Abstract: Microwave-torch plasmas sustained in easy-toionize gases such as argon are strongly affected by the presence of nitrogen when emerging into ambient air. Examination of pictures of their flame as a function of distance from the torch tip provides information to the setting of operating conditions (gas flow and microwave power) such as to minimize contamination of the discharge by nitrogen.

“…The TIA and TIAGO plasmas have been extensively investigated and then employed in numerous applications by Calzada's team (Córdoba, Spain) [111][112][113] and [114][115][116][117], respectively. The paper by Rincón et al [111], which is particularly well documented in terms of operating conditions and plasma behaviour, characterizes some properties of the plasma obtained with the TIAGO system.…”

“…Nitrogen at 8000 K has an enthalpy five times higher than argon [15], since the energy gained by the one-atom gases in the plasma column is given by the specific heat and ionization energy, while in two-atom gases, in addition, the great volume of energy is obtained from the dissociation of molecules into atoms.…”

“…Ao mesmo tempo, a relação entre o tempo de residência e o tempo característico de difusão deve aumentar, de modo que o arrasto das partículas por difusão será muito importante. Esses efeito foi observado e descrito recentemente por(Rincon, Munoz & Calzada 2014).…”
