Influence of chamber structure on arc quenching in multigap system

Abstract: In order to improve the arc quenching ability of the multigap system, it is important to know the principle of arc quenching and how the chamber structure affects the arc development process in the multigap system. In this study, the twodimensional geometric model of the multigap system is established based on the magnetohydrodynamics theory in COMSOL multiphysics simulation platform. The principle of arc quenching in the multigap system is explained in detail by analysing the physical characteristics of the a… Show more

“…However, we can see that the negative streamer of the PFA channel does not vanish because the ionized particles remain airborne, and the PFA energy increases. The temperature of the arc plasma is highest at the longitudinal center line (>14 000 K), very close to the values reported in the arc-extinguishing literature [7][9].…”

“…In recent years, arc-extinguishing devices (AEDs) [7]- [9] have emerged to prevent lightning overvoltage in powerline systems. AEDs should be installed in parallel gaps near insulators (usually on 10-kV and 35-kV grade transmission lines).…”

“…Such multi-physical field coupling may also lead to the relevant parameters between different physical fields interact. To simplify the model, the following assumptions are made [25]: a) Arc plasma involved in this paper is a high heat and long arc plasma that satisfies the thermodynamic local thermodynamic equilibrium; b) Thermal conductivity, kinetic viscosity, electrical conductivity, constant pressure heat capacity are all functions of temperature.…”

“…Literature [14] established a vacuum arc model under an axial magnetic field, studied current density distribution under different magnetic fields and different currents, and analysed the shrinkage effect of currents in a vacuum arc. Literature [15] established an arc model of a multi-gap system, simulated the arc behaviour in a semi-closed chamber, and analysed the influence of the chamber structure on the arc. Literature [16] established a nozzle arc model, studied the morphology and energy exchange mechanism of N 2 , CO 2 , and SF 6 when the arc was extinguished, and compared and analysed the three gases' breaking capacity.…”
