This work aimed to evaluate the role of the addition of blast furnace slag for the formation of reaction products and the strength development of volcanic ash-based phosphate geopolymer. Volcanic ash was replaced by 4 and 6 wt% of ground granulated blast furnace slag to accelerate the reaction kinetics. Then, the influence of boric acid for controlling the setting and kinetics reactions was also evaluated. The results demonstrated that the competition between the dissolution of boric acid and volcanic ash-slag particles is the main process controlling the setting and kinetics reaction. The addition of slag has significantly accelerated the initial and final setting times, whereas the addition of boric acid was beneficial for delaying the setting times. Consequently, it also enhanced the flowability of the paste. The compressive strength increased significantly with the addition of slag, and the optimum replaced rate was 4 wt% which resulted in 28 d strength of 27 MPa. Beyond that percentage, the strength was reduced because of the flash setting of the binder which does not allow a subsequent dissolution of the particles and their precipitation. The binders formed with the addition of slag and/or boric acid are beneficial for the improvement of the water stability of the volcanic ash-based phosphate geopolymer.

Compatibility, a critical issue between sensing material and host structure, significantly influences the detecting performance (e.g., sensitive, signal-to-noise ratio) of the embedded sensor. To address this issue in concrete-based infrastructural health monitoring, cement-based piezoelectric composites (piezoelectric ceramic particles as a function phase and cementitious materials as a matrix) have attracted continuous attention in the past two decades, dramatically exhibiting superior durability, sensitivity, and compatibility. This review paper performs a synthetical overview of recent advances in theoretical analysis, characterization and simulation, materials selection, the fabrication process, and application of the cement-based piezoelectric composites. The critical issues of each part are also presented. The influencing factors of the materials and fabrication process on the final performance of composites are further discussed. Meanwhile, the application of the composite as a sensing element for various monitoring techniques is summarized. Further study on the experiment and simulation, materials, fabrication technique, and application are also pointed out purposefully.

Study on the Overall Reaction Pathways and Structural Transformations during Decomposition of Coal Fly Ash in the Process of Alkali-Calcination

In this research, phase transformation and the role of NaOH on the structure of coal fly ash (CFA) during an alkali-calcination process were identified by a combination of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and deconvolution analysis. The variation in the different functional groups and structural parameters of the raw and post-alkali calcinated CFA were analysed by deconvolution of the FTIR results, conducted with a Gaussian approach. The results, firstly, provide a deep insight into the functional groups in CFA. In CFA systems, the vibration signals of Q0, Q1, Q2 and Q3 were detected and the dominant structural units associated with Si tetrahedron groups were isolated to Q3 and Q2. Deconvolution analysis of the band from 400 to 1400 cm−1 showed that the added NaOH resulted in an increase in Q1 at the cost of Q3 and Q2 and the degree of reaction of the CFA was, therefore, decreased. Concurrently, it was established that the changes in the Gaussian peak component were related to the calcination temperature and time that allowed us to tailor the model of the structural decomposition of CFA.
