Influence of composition on the adhesive strength and initial viscosity of denture adhesives

Abstract: To investigate the effect of composition on the initial viscosity and adhesive strength between denture adhesives and the denture base. Two types of water-soluble polymers (methoxy ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer [PVM-MA] and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose [CMC]) were used. Samples were divided into three groups. Group 1 contained only PVM-MA; Group 2 contained only CMC; and Group 3 contained PVM-MA and CMC. The initial viscosity and adhesive strength were measured. For Group 1, the initial viscosity incr… Show more

“…25 Therefore, the adhesion strength of denture adhesives should be more durable. Han et al 21 examined combinations of water-soluble polymers to improve the durability of the adhesion strength and found consistent effects. Therefore, for the base material in the present study, we used a combination of 35wt% PVM-MA, 20wt% CMC, 40wt% white petrolatum, and 5wt% liquid paraffin.…”

“…When a denture adhesive is immersed in water, the water-soluble polymers are degraded, thereby increasing its viscosity and adhesive strength. 7,21,22 However, the samples containing herbal medicine components consisted of base material (the control group) with herbal medicine. When the adhesive strength was measured using the same amounts of material, the total amount of water-soluble polymer was, apparently, smaller than that in the control samples, resulting in a small water solubility-associated increase in the viscosity.…”

“…15 Denture adhesives exist in a number of forms; powders, pastes, strips, cushions or pads. 16,18,19 These components contain so-called "active" hydrophilic groups that enable the adhesives to swell in the presence of saliva, yet the structural role particularly that played by the alternating PMVE-MA copolymer, is not yet well understood. 16 Most formulation strategies have evolved to take advantage of the humid environment within the oral cavity by mixing with saliva, which hydrates the adhesive, and produces a mucilaginous layer with high tack and adherent properties.…”
