Influence of Connectivity, Wild Prey and Disturbance on Occupancy of Tigers in the Human-Dominated Western Terai Arc Landscape

Abstract: Occupying only 7% of their historical range and confined to forested habitats interspersed in a matrix of human dominated landscapes, tigers (Panthera tigris) typify the problems faced by most large carnivores worldwide. With heads of governments of tiger range countries pledging to reverse the extinction process and setting a goal of doubling wild tiger numbers by 2022, achieving this target would require identifying existing breeding cores, potential breeding habitats and opportunities for dispersal. The Ter… Show more

“…Additional funds and support are also potentially available from federal and state agencies (e.g. NTCA and Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) to resettle Gujjars from ''critical habitats'' identified within multiple-use forests (Harihar and Pandav, 2012) to areas of low conservation value, but with livelihood potential. Some land has already been identified near Pathri consisting of ca.…”

“…Livestock stocking densities and wild prey densities for all ten sites were calculated by dividing their respective abundance estimates by the area of each site. Human population size was included as an indicator of anthropogenic activities (Harihar and Pandav, 2012;Woodroffe, 2000). Anthropogenic activities can influence activity patterns of carnivores, with carnivores avoiding high human activity periods (Carter et al, 2015).…”

“…Corridors facilitate animal movement and are crucial for re-colonizing areas where populations have gone locally extinct and eventually maintaining the metapopulation dynamics [65]. A study on tiger occupancy conducted in a Himalayan foothills landscape found reduction in tiger occupancy owing to presumed loss in functionality of a regional corridor [66]. Another study on the leopard metapopulation of central India reiterates the importance of corridors in maintaining gene flow at landscape level [67].…”
