Influence of Context and Setting on the Mental Health and Wellbeing Outcomes of Ayahuasca Drinkers: Results of a Large International Survey

Abstract: Ayahuasca is a traditional plant decoction containing N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and various β-carbolines including harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine, which has been used ceremonially by Amazonian Indigenous groups for healing and spiritual purposes. Use of the brew has now spread far beyond its original context of consumption to North America, Europe, and Australia in neo-shamanic settings as well as Christian syncretic churches. While these groups have established their own rituals and protocols to… Show more

“…Given the above findings we may consider how to optimise the conditions that permit mysticaltype experiences to unfold safely and allow patients to surrender to the experience (Aday, Davis, Mitzkovitz, Bloesch, & Davoli, 2021), since this has been consistently associated with persisting positive outcomes. These may be modulated by parameters such as dose , choice of psychedelic compound, as preliminary literature suggests differential phenomenology between compounds (Metzner, 2015;Papaseit et al, 2018;Richards, 1975;Shulgin & Shulgin, 1991, 1997, or "set" and "setting" (Hartogsohn, 2017(Hartogsohn, , 2021Kettner et al, 2021;Perkins et al, 2021;Strickland et al, 2021). Notably, despite previous research showing that the scanning environment was strongly associated with negative reactions (Studerus, Gamma, Kometer, & Vollenweider, 2012), our mediation analysis showed no overall mediation effect of sub-project on persisting effects.…”

“…Factors such as the user's expectations, preparation and intention, and physical and social environment (Hartogsohn 2016(Hartogsohn , 2017 all contribute to the therapeutic process. Two of the components contained therein, "set and setting," and the placebo effect, are particularly relevant in the context of psychedelic therapy (Hartogsohn 2017;Perkins et al 2021;Winkelman 2021). According to Hartogsohn (2016) the placebo effect and "set and setting" can be utilized as variables in a process through which the desired results of a treatment modality can be made more probable.…”
