Influence of cooling media in achieving grain refinement of AA2014 alloy using friction stir processing

Abstract: The present paper studies the influence of different cooling media (water and cryogenic media) on microstructure, mechanical, and corrosion behavior of friction stir processing of AA2014. From the electron backscattered diffraction results, it was observed that the grain size in stir zone of air-cooled friction stir processing, dry ice-cooled friction stir processing, and underwater friction stir processing are 4.9 µm, 3.5 µm, and 0.9 µm respectively, and the fraction of high angle grain boundaries are more in… Show more

“…Different mechanisms are involved in the evolution of fine-grained structure and the formation of HABS during FSP. 38,4044 It should be noted that during FSP, grain refinement is not obtained either by dynamic recovery (DRV) or by discontinuations-DRX (D-DRX) alone. But the grains are refined in SZ due to the combined action of DRV and D-DRX.…”

“…The authors took the data of Jain et al. 41 They fabricated the AA5083-SiC/CNT composites through FSP and statistical data of those composites such as grain size, hardness, and tensile strength were summarized in Table 4. By using Table 4 data, the authors established a relationship between hardness and strength (YS and UTS) using equations (5) and (6) as shown in Figure 10.…”

“…The MWCNTs mainly improve the strength and hardness of the matrix, and thus better resistance to plastic deformation is achieved, leading to the reduction in the plowing effect of the reinforcement from the matrix. This can also be attributed to a decrease in weight loss with an increase in MWCNTs [42,43].…”

“…17 The process imposes large plastic strain and dynamic recrystallization that induce grain refinement especially in aluminium alloys. 18 FSP on AA7075 by reinforcing B 4 C was carried out by Srinivasa rao et al 19 It was noted that FSP had significantly improved the ballistic performance of AA7075 material by reducing the Depth of Penetration (DOP). Around 1.6 times higher ballistic mass efficiency was obtained by Shanmugasundaram et al 20 by blending B 4 C and TiB 2 particles as reinforcements into AA7005 alloy by FSP technique.…”
