Influence of Dams on Downstream Beaches: Eressos, Lesbos, Eastern Mediterranean

Abstract: Small water storage dams are nowadays regarded as the ideal solution for the waterthirsty islands of the Greek Archipelago. Several of these dams have been already constructed and more are planned for the near future. However, dams can also create problems to coastal areas, particularly to the beaches found at the lower reaches of the dammed rivers. The present contribution reports the results of a study undertaken on the effects of such a dam located at Eressos, Lesbos (E. Mediterranean), using both morpholog… Show more

“…Soft coasts are relatively less developed, occurring typically adjacent to small coastal plains, especially inside the two gulfs (Novak and Soulakellis, 2000). Spring tides are low, not exceeding 0.25 m on the eastern coast (Vousdoukas et al, 2009a,b) and 0.2 m on the western one (Velegrakis et al, 2008). Table 1).…”

“…Dams are related with the capture of sediment of the drainage basin resulting in negative sediment balance and subsequent morphological changes. This dam retains more than half of the sediment load produced in the basin (Velegrakis et al, 2008). The medium and coarse grained sediments from the uplands of basin also are captured by the dam.…”

“…Eressos basin is found on upper Paleozoic-Triassic schists, conglomerates, limestones and slates, and Neogene volcanics (Velegrakis et al, 2008). The sub-basin located upstream of the dam consists of a n ignimbritic layer, a tephra layer and a dacitic lava unit (Hecht, 1975).…”
