Influence of degree of deacetylation on critical concentration of chitosan/dichloroacetic acid liquid‐crystalline solution

Abstract: We prepared chitosans with various degrees of deacetylation (DDAs) by mixing completely deacetylated chitosan and acetic anhydride at room temperature without serious degradation and O-substitution. We obtained a standard curve to measure DDA by plotting the IR absorbance ratio of A(1560)/A(2880) against the known DDAs (from 1-100%) of 10 specimens. The effect of DDA on the critical concentration (C*) of chitosan/dichloroacetic acid solutions required to form mesophase was investigated by optical methods. A ma… Show more

“…The amide I bands at 1655 cm −1 (sometimes together with the amide I band at 1630 cm −1 ) or the amide II band at 1560 cm −1 are used as the characteristic band(s) of N -acetylation. Among the postulated internal reference bands are the OH stretching band at 3450 cm −1 [125,133], the C-H stretching band at 2870–2880 cm −1 [134], the –CH 2 bending centred at 1420 cm −1 [129], the amide III band at 1315–1320 cm −1 [135], the anti-symmetric stretching of the C-O-C bridge at around 1160 cm −1 [136], the skeletal vibrations involving the C-O-C stretching bands at 1070 or 1030 cm −1 [127,128] and the band at 897 cm −1 (C-O-C bridge as well as glycosidic linkage) [137]. The different baselines suggested in the literature [129] are presented in Figure 8.…”

“…In chitin, the degree of acetylation is typically 0.90, indicating the presence of certain amine groups (as a certain amount of deacetylatikon can occur during extraction, chitin may also contain about 5-15% of amine groups) [5,10]. Thus, the degree of N-acetylation, i.e.…”
