Influence of delayed cooling on storability and postharvest quality of European plums

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Delayed cooling has been tested to delay the development of internal breakdown (IB) in other stone fruits, but the influence of delayed cooling on IB has not been studied to date in European plums. A controlled delayed treatment of 48 h at 20• C was applied in order to study the storability and postharvest quality of European plum (Prunus domestica L.) cv. 'Green Gage'.

“…The Pearson correlation changes indicated that physiological modifications occurred in sweet cherry exposed to postharvest chitosan treatment during cold storage and shelf life period, with changes in MDA content and enzyme activities as CAT, SOD, APX, LOX, PPO and POD. These results are in agreement with previous studies on other commodities (Infante et al, 2008a;Cano-Salazar et al, 2013;Guerra and Casquero, 2009;Infante et al, 2008b;Pasquariello et al, 2013).…”

“…'RG' in CS had higher levels of TSS:TA than apples stored in CA. Untreated 'RG' apples in CS had higher levels of TSS:TA than treated apples (Table 2), so fruit quality expressed as TSS:TA value, which has been found to be more closely related to quality than acid content or TSS alone (Guerra and Casquero, 2009), would be higher in untreated than treated fruit. Significant differences were found in TSS:TA ratio between cultivars during storage, so TSS:TA was higher in 'RC' than in 'RG' (Tables 1 and 2), due to the higher TSS value in 'RC'.…”

“…, 2004), both TSS and TA would play an important role in the quality of this low‐sugar cultivar. High correlation has been found between TSS:TA and sensory characteristics in European plums (Guerra & Casquero, 2009). Moreover, it has been proved that consumer acceptance is governed by the sugar‐acid ratio (Crisosto et al.…”
