Influence of Desglycinamide-(Arg8) Vasopressin on Memory in Healthy Subjects

Abstract: In 12 healthy student volunteers the influence on memory, attention and mood of a single dose of 2 mg of the vasopressin analog, desglycinamide-(arg8) vasopressin (DGAVP), given by the nasal route was investigated. On day 1 all subjects received placebo (single-blind), 1 week later they were given either DGAVP or placebo (double-blind). Memory effects were measured with the Buschke restrictive reminding method. DGAVP significantly improved storage processes, with retrieval processes less affected. A… Show more

“…This was unsurprising, although we know of no other studies providing evidence of comparable performance between American and Dutch subjects. Although WCST and BSRT were developed and widely used in the United States, they have been used in the Netherlands (Bruins et al., 1990; van den Berg et al., 2020). More articles on WCST have actually been published by Netherlands-based publishers (one large one in particular) than those of any other country (Silva-Filho et al., 2011).…”

“…It is still unclear whether or not vasopressin acts directly on the neural substrates of memory, or indirectly, for example, by enhancing arousal (Ettenberg et al 1983 ;De Wied et al 1988). Beneficial effects of different vasopressin fragments on both short-term and long-term memory processes were found in healthy volunteers (Weingartner et al 1981 ;Bruins et al 1990Bruins et al , 1992. Others, however, have failed to demonstrate a clear effect in humans (Fehm-Wolfsdorf et al 1988 ;.…”
