The Upper Carboniferous sandstone reservoir is a vital replacement area for natural gas exploration in Ordos Basin. In this study, 157 Jinci sandstone samples were selected to conduct a series of experiments and analyses. The reservoir material composition and pore structure analysis shows that the lithology of the reservoir is mainly quartz arenite, followed by sublithic arenite. The detrital particles are mainly quartz (69–97.5%), followed by rock fragments (0.1–24.5%), and the content of feldspar is less than 0.01%. The cement consists of siliceous material, clay minerals, and carbonate, with averages of 2.34, 5.96, and 1.81%, respectively. Three types of pore-throat structures (HPMI curve: types 1, 2, and 3) are identified in the Jinci sandstone reservoir, corresponding to different pore-throat radius distributions (RCP curves: types A, B, and C). The study of the factors affecting reservoir pore structure and its internal mechanism shows that the reservoir pore-throat combination, affecting the reservoir performance, is mainly controlled by deposit composition and the subsquent diagenetic modification. A higher rigid particle content and an appropriate amount of siliceous cementation (2–10%) would lead to resistance of the compaction, in favor of the preservation of primary intergranular pores. When the content of ductile particles is more than 3%, the original intergranular pores tend to be substantially reduced. The deposit composition of sandstone controls the preservation of residual intergranular pores by affecting the intensity of compaction and dissolution controlling the amount and type of cementation. Compared with dissolution-subjected quartz arenites, the sublithic arenites are characterized by a common occurrence of altered kaolinite and recrystallized illite, which would destroy the reservoir property. The early diagenetic carbonate cementation, as well as the strong siliceous cementation in “sedimentary quartz arenite”, are unfavorable to the formation of high-quality reservoirs. Then, on the basis of the characteristics of various diagenesis and their interaction and internal relationship, the diagenetic sequence and diagenetic-pore evolution patterns of different types of reservoirs were established. Finally, according to the lithological characteristics and the diagenetic-controlled pore-throat evolution patterns of different types of reservoirs, the reservoir quality in the study area was predicted.

Tight sandstone gas in coal-bearing strata has become an important unconventional gas worldwide. This research aims at understanding the impacts of coal evolution on diagenesis and reservoir quality of sandstones by means of thin section, cathode luminescence (CL), scanning electron microscope (SEM), stable isotope analysis, and fluid inclusions. The results show that carbonate cement was the main type of cement developed in tight sandstone reservoirs, of which the carbonate ions were jointly provided by coal layers and reaction in adjacent mudstones. For sandstones close to coal layers, their carbonate ions were mainly controlled by coal evolution and there was various carbonate cement developed due to cations supplied by seawater and the intense dissolution of volcanic fragments and feldspars. Combined with coal thermal simulation and burial history, it implies that at different maturity stages of coal evolution, its impact on sandstone diagenesis was different. In the early stage, the main product was CO2, which caused the dissolution of early calcite and promoted intense compaction. In the mature stage, CO2 and other hydrocarbon gases were released, resulting in more dissolution and silica cementation. In the over-mature stage, the main product was methane, and CO2 that did not spill out preserved by forming carbonate cement. The coal evolution had a strong impact on the reservoir quality of sandstone with large grain sizes, but little effect on medium- and fine-grained sandstones. High porosity and low permeability reservoirs were usually formed in small conglomerates and coarse-grained sandstones away from coal layers. While low porosity and high permeability reservoirs were distributed close to coal layers. This study aids in understanding the formation mechanism of tight sandstone reservoirs in coal measures and provides theoretic support for further exploration.

Determining the process of densification and tectonic evolution of tight sandstone can help to understand the distribution of reservoirs and find relatively high‐permeability areas. Based on integrated approaches of thin section, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cathode luminescence (CL), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), N2 porosity and permeability, micro‐resistivity imaging log (MIL) and three‐dimensional seismic data analysis, this work discussed the reservoir characteristics of the member 8 of the Permian Xiashihezi Formation (He 8 sandstones) in the Linxing area of eastern Ordos Basin, determined the factors affecting reservoir quality, and revealed the formation mechanism of relatively high‐permeability areas. The results show that the He 8 sandstones in the Linxing area are mainly composed of feldspathic litharenites, and are typical tight sandstones (with porosity <10% and permeability <1 mD accounting for 80.3% of the total samples). Rapid burial is the main reason for reservoir densification, which resulted in 61% loss of the primary porosity. In this process, quartz protected the original porosity by resisting compaction. The cementation (including carbonate, clay mineral and siliceous cementation) further densified the sandstone reservoirs, reducing the primary porosity with an average value of 28%. The calcite formed in the eodiagenesis occupied intergranular pores and affected the formation of the secondary pores by preventing the later fluid intrusion, and the Fe‐calcite formed in the mesodiagenetic stage densified the sandstones further by filling the residual intergranular pores. The clay minerals show negative effects on reservoir quality, however, the chlorite coatings protected the original porosity by preventing the overgrowth of quartz. The dissolution of feldspars provides extensive intergranular pores which constitute the main pore type, and improves the reservoir quality. The tectonic movements play an important role in improving the reservoir quality. The current tectonic traces of the study area are mainly controlled by the Himalayan movement, and the high‐permeability reservoirs are mainly distributed in the anticline areas. Additionally, the improvement degree (by tectonic movements) of reservoir quality is partly controlled by the original composition of the sandstones. Thus, the selection of potential tight gas well locations in the study area should be focused on the anticline areas with relatively good original reservoir quality. And the phenomena can be referenced for other fluvial tight sandstone basins worldwide.
