Influence of dietary fiber intake and soluble to insoluble fiber ratio on reproductive performance of sows during late gestation under hot climatic conditions

Abstract: This study evaluated dietary fiber (DF) level and the ratio of soluble fiber (SF): insoluble fiber (ISF) impact on sows’ reproductive performance under heat stress. Forty sows at day 90 of gestation were assigned to four treatments. HH diet had, 20% DF, 1:4, SF:ISF ratio; HL, 20% DF, 1:6, SF:ISF ratio; LH, 14% DF, 1:4, SF:ISF, LL, 14% DF, 1:6, SF:ISF. Results showed that; lactation back-fat loss was lower (P < 0.05) in HH . Feed intake was higher (P < 0.05) in HH and HL. Farrowing duration shorter (P <… Show more

“…The dramatic reduction of plasma zonulin concentration in the BF treatment shows the beneficial effects of bacteriophages in controlling the population of transferred B. bronchiseptica into the gasterointestinal tract. Zonulin is a protein that regulates the permeability of tight junctions in the gut lining 35 , 36 . Elevated levels of zonulin have been associated with increased gut permeability 35 , 37 , which is a hallmark of inflammatory diseases.…”

The measurement of plasma zonulin levels is used as a marker of gut permeability and is being studied as a potential diagnostic tool for various diseases 35 .…”

“…In agreement, SF produces more acetate than butyrate [1]. Effect of fermentation and acetate synthesis in the colon plays a significant role in promoting intestinal development and health by lowering the vulnerability to LPS [1]. Additionally, SCFA production enhances barrier function and decreases intestinal permeability in epithelial cells, which is a crucial factor in modifying intestinal health, inflammation, and nutritional digestibility [3,9].…”

“…The interaction between SF with water in digesta increases the volume of stools, resulting in more typical bowel motions, which may contribute to the mitigation of constipation incidence [7]. Furthermore, SF reduces the occurrence of diarrhea and improves water-holding capacity, gut health, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, leading to a stable environment in the intestine [1].…”
