Influence of different menstrual phases on the Bispectral Index during dexmedetomidine sedation

Abstract: To investigate the influence of different menstrual phases on the Bispectral Index (BIS) during dexmedetomidine (Dex) sedation, 40 patients with regular menstrual cycle, American Society of Anesthesiologists I-II, aged 18-40 years, undergoing selective gynecologic laparoscopic surgery, were enrolled. According to different menstrual phases and the serum progesterone concentration, they were divided into two groups: the follicular phase group (Group F) and the luteal phase group (Group L), and each group had 20… Show more

“… 15 , 16 Furthermore, dexmedetomidine is a new type of α2-adrenergic receptor agonist with the effects of sedation, stress inhibition, and reduction of sympathetic activity. 18 Nevertheless, it has a great negative impact on cardiopulmonary circulation, with a higher risk of inducing hypotension and bradycardia in the patient. 17 , 19 Acting as analgesics and sedatives with different mechanisms, oxycodone hydrochloride and dexmedetomidine may act on different sites of pain reflex arc respectively, and thus exert a synergistic effect under a combined usage.…”

“…The sedative effect of dexmedetomidine has been shown to be more significant in female patients during the luteal phase of menstrual cycles than the follicular phase [ 23 ]. Progesterone and its metabolites are known to have sedative, anxiolytic, analgesic and anticonvulsant effects [ 24 26 ].…”

“…Only four studies have tried to directly study the influence of the phase of the menstrual cycle on anaesthetic requirement [ Table 2 ]. [ 43 46 47 48 ] Erden et al . found a decreased sevoflurane requirement in the LP compared to the FP.…”

“…Thus, the sedative effect of dexmedetomidine was more significant during the LP than during the FP. [ 48 ] Hoshino et al . found in a study that the passive collapsibility of the upper airway was higher in the mid-LP than in the FP during propofol anaesthesia.…”
