Influence of different therapy approaches: With or without manual extraction - of retained placenta on reproductive performance in Simmental cows

Abstract: The aim of the research was to determine the influence of different methods used in the therapy of retained placenta on conception rate and duration of days open in cows. Research was performed on 241 Simmental cows aged 2-8 years divided in three groups. The first group of cows (group A) (n=82) with retained placenta was treated with manual extraction of placenta 12-24 h after parturition combined with application of intrauterine antibiotics. The second group (group B) (n=79) with retained placenta was … Show more

“…The most important macroelements that can influence homeostasis in dairy cows are: total calcium (Ca), total magnesium (Mg), inorganic phosphorus, potassium (K) and sodium (Na) (DEGARIS and LEAN, 2008). The imbalances in mineral metabolism during the peripartal period are a precondition for the development of disorders such as: hypocalcaemia, ketosis, displacement of abomasum, retention of fetal membranes, grass tetany, mastitis and lameness (GOFF, 2006;MULLIGAN and DOHERTY, 2008;ĐURIČIĆ et al, 2011;VINCE et al, 2017).…”

“…These endotoxins may directly affect bovine neutrophils with their cytotoxic effect and thus facilitate infection with bacterial species such as A. pyogenes, Escherichia coli, streptococci and staphylococci, which are very frequent during early puerperium. These infections are also observed in about 65% of cows with endometritis (Djuricic et al, 2011b).…”

“…However, the main role is attributed to structural changes in fetoplacental connections and hormonal disturbances. Cows with retained fetal membrane belong to a high risk group prone to the appearance of metritis (Djuricic et al, 2011b). The appearance of endometritis or metritis following delivery is a consequence of retained fetal membrane in about 25% of cases.…”

“…Every cow underwent a gynecological examination 12 − 24 h after the calving, and RP was diagnosed if the fetal membranes were seen hanging from the vulva or remained inside the uterus (Djuricic et al. 2011 ; Peter 2013 ; Sheldon 2018 ). The treatment included the application of 1-2 g of oxytetracycline (Geomycin F® tablets) between the uterus and placenta.…”
