Influence of Different Treadmill Inclinations on V̇o 2max and Ventilatory Thresholds During Maximal Ramp Protocols

Abstract: Silva, SC, Monteiro, WD, Cunha, FA, and Farinatti, P. Influence of different treadmill inclinations on V[Combining Dot Above]O2max and ventilatory thresholds during maximal ramp protocols. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2018-Ramp protocols for cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) lack precise recommendations, including optimal treadmill inclination. This study investigated the impact of treadmill grades applied in ramp CPETs on maximal oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2max), ventilatory thresholds… Show more

“…During studies selection, we did not define the criteria for the VO2max measurement protocol due to the high variability of the currently described methods. Nevertheless, according to the current literature, different testing protocols were applied for runners and cyclists [ 48 51 ]. Similar values of VO 2max were observed, which suggests that it is possible to provide an exact comparison between them.…”

“…A cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) was performed by patients to obtain information on their exercise tolerance before intervention. According to the exercise testing guidelines recommended by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the cardiopulmonary exercise test in this study utilized a graded ascending exercise protocol (Ramp protocol), with a total exercise test time expected to fall within 8-12 min (19,20). The termination criteria included reaching the target heart rate, as well as monitoring for various cardiac abnormalities such as frequent ventricular premature contractions, polygenic ventricular premature contractions, ventricular tachycardia, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, slow heart rate, angina, decreased blood pressure, dyspnea, shortness of breath, fatigue, inability to persist, and ischemic ST segment depression (21).…”
