Influence of early life stress on later hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis functioning and its covariation with mental health symptoms: A study of the allostatic process from childhood into adolescence

Abstract: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a primary mechanism in the allostatic process through which early life stress (ELS) contributes to disease. Studies of the influence of ELS on children’s HPA axis functioning have yielded inconsistent findings. To address this issue, the present study considers multiple types of ELS (maternal depression, paternal depression, and family expressed anger), mental health symptoms, and two components of HPA functioning (trait-like and epoch-specific activity) in a lo… Show more

“…a stressor, the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline is stimulated in the adrenals, which results in an increase in heart rate, stroke volume and respiratory rate, bronchial and pupillary dilatation, outflow of blood from limbs to muscles, heart, and brain, and an inhibition of digestive processes [12,13].…”

“…Activation of the CRH-ACTH-system is manifested by an increase in blood concentration of glucose, resulting from enhanced glycogenolysis and blockade of cellular uptake of this sugar. Moreover, cortisol stimulates lipolysis and degradation of proteins, as well as cleavage of fatty acids to ketone bodies [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Similar to the CCKergic system, the HPA axis system has long been recognized as a stress hormone [105,106], and plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of ADs [107,108]. Indeed, following ELS, the activity of the HPA axis system is dysfunctional [109][110][111]. Moreover, given the overall role of both the HPA axis system [112][113][114] and the CCKergic system [115][116][117] in regulating neuronal, cardiovascular, and metabolic functions in the body, these two systems may play an integrative role in the pathogenesis of post-ELS disorders.…”
