Influence of ejaculatory abstinence period on semen quality of 5165 normozoospermic and oligozoospermic Nigerian men: A retrospective study

Abstract: Background and Aims: Several studies have shown that the length of ejaculatory abstinence alters sperm quality. However, the available data are conflicting and none seems to exist in a Nigerian population. The present study aims to compare the semen quality in normozoospermic and oligozoospermic semen samples of a homogenous Nigerian population, following varying ejaculatory abstinence days (EAD); less than 2, 2-3, and 3-7 days. Methods: The present retrospective study included 5165 semen samples collected over… Show more

“…An estimate of about one in six (approximately, 15%) couples are affected by infertility globally, and about 50% of this is due to male factor only and in combination with female factor (1)(2)(3). This has been associated with the global decline in sperm quality (4,5), which occurs in concert with hormonal disruption (4).…”

“…Semen samples were collected through masturbation into a clean and sterile wide-mouthed plastic universal sample bottle at our hospital with 2–7-days intervals of sexual abstinence ( 18 ). Semen analyses were performed pretreatment and 3 months after medication based partly on the World Health Organization 2010 report, using the Sperm Motility Analyzing System (SMAS™: DITECT Corp., Tokyo, Japan) after 30 min of liquefaction at room temperature ( 19 ).…”
