Influence of epicentral distance on local seismic response in Kolkata City, India

Abstract: The influence of source and epicentral distance on the local seismic response in the Kolkata city is investigated by computing the seismic ground motion along 2-D geological cross-sections in the Kolkata city for the earthquake that occurred on 12 June 1897 (M w = 8.1; focal mechanism: dip = 57 • , strike = 110 • and rake = 76 • ; focal depth = 9 km) in Shillong plateau. For the estimation of ground motion parameters, a hybrid technique is used, which is the combination of modal summation and finite difference… Show more

“…The area is characterized by many depressions in the form of marshes, shallow wetlands, and ox-bow lakes which are the remnants of the old river channels of Bhagirathi [18]. The deltaic plain is primarily covered by younger alluvial soils, mainly silty and clayey loams, which have been deposited by the rivers throughout the Quaternary [19]. At present, meagre amount of natural vegetation is found in the KMA as the continuous expansion of built-up and cultivated areas have replaced the natural vegetation covers.…”

“…The hybrid method has demonstrated its validity as a tool to perform the seismic microzonation of urban areas (e.g. Panza et al, 2002;Alvarez et al, 2005;Harbi et al, 2007;Zuccolo et al, 2008;Amponsah et al, 2009;Mohanty et al, 2013). Given its widespread application, quite some resources have been dedicated to the development of helper applications that permit an easy and nearly error-proof construction of the finite difference mesh.…”

“…The epicentral distance has significant effect on local seismic response for Kolkata city (Mohanty et al, 2013), based on which demand envelope is necessary for hazard estimation. This enables a structural engineer to understand the appropriate demand that needs to be taken for design of a building in zones with amplification levels.…”
