Influence of Erbium Ions on the Optical and Structural Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol

Abstract: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films doped with erbium chloride (ErCl 3 ) have been prepared by casting from their aqueous solutions. The structure of the doped samples as well as the interactions between the host PVA and Er +3 was investigated using FTIR spectroscopy. The optical measurement was recorded at room temperature in the range from 200 nm to 2000 nm. FTIR measurements revealed that Er +3 forms complex configuration within the PVA structure. PVA doped with 9 wt% of ErCl 3 exhibits energy gap and refractive … Show more

“…An increase in the excitation and emission wavelengths with increasing particle size was observed in ZnO-polybutanediol mono acrylate (PBDMA) nanocomposites [16] and for ZnO quantum dots dispersed in PMMA [17]. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has easy film forming ability, ease in incorporation of dopants, sensing property, biocompatibility and ability to encapsulate unstable nanoparticles and is a promising candidate for opto-electronic applications [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. Salicyclic acid (SA) and its sodium salt added to PVA is found to make a good optical sensor for water/humidity as its photoluminescence gets quenched in the presence of moisture [18].…”
