Influence of Extremophiles on the Generation of Acid Mine Drainage at the Abandoned Pan de Azúcar Mine (Argentina)

Abstract: The risk of generation of acid drainages in the tailings of the Pan de Azúcar mine that closed its activities more than three decades ago, was evaluated through biooxidation studies using iron- and sulfur-oxidizing extremophilic leaching consortia. Most of tailings showed a high potential for generating acid drainage, in agreement with the results from net acid generation (NAG) assays. In addition, molecular analysis of the microbial consortia obtained by enrichment of the samples, demonstrated that native lea… Show more

“…There is evidence of environmental pollution due to AMD characterized by low pH, high conductivity, and high concentration of metals from the Pan de Azúcar abandoned mine (lead, silver, zinc) in the Pozuelos basin of Jujuy province, Argentina (Kirschbaum et al, 2012;Murray et al, 2021). This AMD constitutes a severe environmental impact on the nearby areas that are hydrologically connected to the Pan de Azúcar mine (Plaza Caz on et al, 2013;Plaza-Caz on et al, 2021), constituting an anthropogenic source of metals in the Pozuelos basin (Murray et al, 2021). In the last decade, there was also a significant increase in lithium mining activities.…”

“…The IGCP-707 project had an important role because it enhanced the scientific collaborations among the participants. These publications filled scientific gaps on the topic, bringing important knowledge needed for a comprehensive understanding of the origin, distribution, and biogeochemistry of As in the Altiplano-Puna plateau (Escalera et al, 2020;Murray et al, 2021;Plaza-Cazón et al, 2021;Quino-Lima et al, 2020 a, b;Tapia et al, 2021;2022 a, b, c;Murray et al, 2023). These publications cover a wide range of subjects including geology, geochemistry, environmental sciences, hydrogeology, remediation methods, and human health.…”
