Influence of filler on bite impression material in transillumination method for occlusal examination

Abstract: The purpose of this present study was to investigate the influence of material filler and RGB values' fluctuation on creating a calibration curve, which indicates the relationship between material thickness and transmitted light brightness using the transillumination method. Creating the calibration curves were carried out through the following three methods; 1) the conventional method creates the calibration curve with a formula of thickness, 2) the maximum value method, with samples of a specified thickness,… Show more

“…Although articulating paper has been most commonly used, its marks would be affected by its width, and the salivary impregnation can diffuse the paper ink, leading to false positives 34–36 . Transillumination of silicon bite registration can overcome the problems of articulating paper, but the result depends much on the orientation of the light resource and would be affected by the filler in the bite registration material 37, 38 .…”

“…The occlusal records were located on a film viewer and recorded using a digital camera. The images of the occlusal records were analyzed using the silicone black technique 13) . Occlusal condition in molar regions was evaluated by the following three parameters, which were defined by the interocclusal distance: number of contacts, 0− 50 μm thickness; tight contact areas: 0−50 μm thickness; and intermediate contact areas: 50−100 μm thickness.…”

“…"From this method, it is possible to preserve occlusal records and compare their findings through observation. In our previous studies, we created a threshold curve to accurately detect the occlusal contact area on a digital photograph 10) , and investigated the influence of filler on bite impression material via the transillumination method 11) .…”
