Influence of Fishing Technique on Organochlorine Pesticide Accumulation in Fish and its Possible Human Health Risk in the Republic of Bénin

Abstract: In Bénin different techniques are used for large-scale commercial fishing, Acadjas (enclosures constructed in the river) and Whédos (holes made in the river banks). This study aimed at assessing the extent of contamination related to these fishing techniques. Fish contained residues of DDT and its metabolites, α-endosulfan, dieldrin, aldrin, endrin and lindane. Pesticide levels were similar in fish from Acadjas and Whédos, except for higher α-endosulfan levels in fish from the Whédos. Comparing pesticide intak… Show more

“…Pazou and colleagues detected several OCPs in fish with different concentrations ( n g/g lipid weight (lw)), including DDTs (1,642), endosulfans (7,926), aldrin (24), dieldrin (57), endrin (13) and lindane (13), respectively [72, 91,92,93]. Interestingly, an earlier study in the same river detected lindane as the most prevalent OCP (105 µ g/g) [71].…”

“…Vegetables : Vegetables grown in the river’s floodplains in Benin also contained several OCPs in variable concentrations ( µ g/g dry weight (dw)), DDTs (1,578), drins (57) and lindane (444), respectively (Table 1) [72, 91,92,93]. …”
