INFLUENCE OF FOUR VESICULAR‐ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI ON NUTRIENT UPTAKE AND GROWTH IN BARLEY (HORDEUM VULGARE)

Abstract: Summary Barley was inoculated with Glomus constrictus, G. fasciculatus isolate no. 185, G. fasciculatus isolate no. 0–1 and Gigaspora margarita in sterilized soil in pots. Plants inoculated with G. constrictus and with G. fasciculatus isolates showed an increased total uptake of P, Cu and Zn, an increased yield of grain and an increased yield of straw. Plants inoculated with G. margarita did not differ from control plants in growth or P, Cu and Zn uptake. Increase of growth was not correlated with intensity of… Show more

“…The soil-disturbance-induced reduction in P absorption may have heen mediated through some other facet of root morphology or physiology. Clarke & Mosse (1981) and Jensen (1982) demonstrated that visually determined percentages of VA mycorrhizal infection in barley roots did not necessarily correlate with beneficial growth eflects. Furthermore, Ali (1969) found that different hyphae ofthe same plantfungus association accumulated different amounts of^P .…”

“…Publications investigating the effect of AM symbiosis on this female function mostly report positive or neutral effects on flower, fruit and seed production, even though exceptions also exist (Table 2). Interestingly, the response observed seems to be dependent on the fungal species used (Jensen, 1982;Schenk and Smith, 1982;Oliveira et al, 2006; Table 1), as when the same plant was inoculated with different AM fungal species, a range of responses was observed.…”
