Influence of geography on language competition

Abstract: Competition between languages or cultural traits diffusing in the same geographical area is studied combining the language competition model of Abrams and Strogatz and a human dispersal model on an inhomogeneous substrate. Also, the effect of population growth is discussed. It is shown through numerical experiments that the final configuration of the surviving language can be strongly affected by geographical and historical factors. These factors are not related to the dynamics of culture transmission, but rat… Show more

“…(iv) In order to take into account population dispersal in space (as done in Refs. [8][9][10] and below), it is much simpler to use population densities rather than population fractions (this will become obvious from the equations we introduce below), and this is why we use population densities (rather than fractions) throughout this paper.…”

“…The present paper aims to present such a model. In fact, very interesting quantitative models on language interaction do exist [7][8][9][10][11], but they do not seem to deal with the problem of explaining the geographical spread rate of the expanding language. In contrast, the model in the present paper makes it possible to quantify the e¤ect of di¤erent processes and parameters on the speed of language replacement.…”

“…Due to such limitations, the model was revised and extended by many authors, especially from the field of (statistical) physics. Patriarca and Leppänen (2004) and Patriarca and Heinsalu (2009) include spatial components in their adoptions of the AS model. Taking geographical inhomogeneities into account they were able to show that it is possible that both languages survive in two different geographical regions.…”
