Influence of grain size distribution on dynamic shear modulus of sands

Abstract: Abstract:The paper presents the results of laboratory tests, that verify the correlation between the grain-size characteristics of non-cohesive soils and the value of the dynamic shear modulus. The problem is a continuation of the research performed at the Institute of Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics in Karlsruhe, by T. Wichtmann and T. Triantafyllidis, who derived the extension of the applicability of the Hardin's equation describing the explicite dependence between the grain size distribution of sands and … Show more

“…A few types of granular, non-cohesive materials were selected for the study, which were prepared according to [62] (the specimen was prepared from pre-formed non-cohesive soil fractions). All specimens were made of soils that according to ISO 14688-1:2002 standard [63] can be classified as sands (Sa).…”

“…The particle size distribution (PSD) curve is an important soil characteristic that is widely used for preliminary estimates of numerous physical properties of granular soils, such as potentials of internal erosion, particle breakage, sedimentation, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, etc. [1][2][3][4][5]. For instance, Seelheim [6] and Hazen [7] pioneered the determination of saturated hydraulic conductivity based on the semi-logarithmic PSD curve.…”
