Influence of graphene on thermal degradation and crystallization kinetics behaviour of poly(lactic acid)

Abstract: In present study, the effect of graphene (GR) on crystallization and thermal degradation kinetic behavior of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was investigated. The non isothermal cold crystallization kinetic study for PLA-GR nanocomposites was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry at different heating rates of 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10°C/min. The obtained kinetic data were analyzed using crystallization kinetic models such as Avrami and Tobin methods. The decreasing trend obtained in the Avrami as well as Tobin … Show more

“…On the contrary to above-mentioned publications, in PLA/lignin composites produced by Anwer et al [19] an increase in lignin content caused the shift of T c to higher temperature values. Also for PLA/-graphene composites, that relationship was noticed [12]. In terms of T m , the discrepancy between reference sample (177.5°C) and composites (173.9-175.3°C) was not very vast and consistent with other papers [21,49].…”

“…Wang et al [11] proved that the addition of the multiamide, heterogeneous, nucleating agent to PLA can effectively improve both nucleation ability and thermal resistance of the polymer. Also graphene exhibits the nucleating ability in the PLA matrix [12] causing the reduction in the nucleation induction period. It is reflected in the enhanced thermal stability of polymer matrix.…”

“…The crystallized fraction (v%) gradually decreases from 23.9% for the pure PLA to 22.0% for one nano-carbon layer and to 10.2% for the 4 nano-carbon layers sandwiches. This confirms that graphene exhibits nucleation effect, 17 which leads to a decrease of the nucleus size by increasing the nano-carbon filler content in the sandwich structures. Double melting peak (T m ) was observed for the nano-carbon containing sandwich samples, which is associated with the presence of two materials.…”

“…[9,10] Thus, it is necessary to improve the crystallization rate of PLA. So far, numerous researchers have mainly focused on blending PLA with a nucleating agent [11][12][13][14][15] or other flexible polymers, [16][17][18][19][20] which are effective ways to enhance the crystallization rate of PLA.…”
