Influence of human activities on some medium and large-sized mammals’ richness and abundance in the Lacandon Rainforest

Abstract: We evaluated the influence of six human activities (related variables) on the richness and abundance of large and medium-sized mammals in the southern portion of the Lacandon Rainforest, including protected and non-protected areas. The human activities measured have different influences on mammal richness and abundance. Our results show that some human activities (human density and anthropogenic land cover, and agriculture/cattle ranching) had no effect on large and medium-sized mammal populations, but communi… Show more

“…The total number, length and distance and width of line transects were determined by the size and topography of the sites. 2,16 Diversity and threat data of mammals in the study site was collected from the established line transect in each habitat from April 2018 to May 2018. 5 Direct and indirect observations of medium and large mammals were conducted along randomly selected transects (trails, footpaths and other access routes).…”

“…Mammals are an important ecological constituent of terrestrial ecosystems. 1 Large−sized mammals (weigh more than 7kg) and medium−sized mammals (weigh between 2 and 7kg), 2 in particular have important ecosystem functions. 3 They regulate plant diversity and structure and potential pest species through hervibory, other animal populations through predation, and plant dispersion through seeds consumption.…”

“…Higher animals, such as mammals, have been demonstrated to be significantly influenced by human activities, and the destruction of natural habitats is considered to be the major threat to wild animals [8]. According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List [9], 286 species of 5801 mammalian species recorded are listed as EX (extinct) or EW (extinct in the wild).…”

“…The loss and modification of natural habitats have been considered the greatest threats to the conservation of the diversity and the main disturbing agent of the mammal communities (Cuarón, 2000;Porras et al, 2016). Medium and large sized mammals are key elements to the ecosystem, as they play an important role in forest maintenance and regeneration, as well as providing ecological services that are essential for the environment in ISSN On-Line: 1807-0205 ISSN Printed: 0031-1049 ISNI: 0000-0004-0384-1825 structuring the biological communities (Cuarón, 2000;Jones & Safi, 2011).…”
