Influence of hypothyroidism induced at prepuberty on epididymal lipids and the number and motility of spermatozoa in rats*

Abstract: Fifteen prepubertal male rats (age 30 days) were divided into three groups of five each: Group 1, hypothyroid (Tx)--rats were thyroidectomized at day 30; Group 2, T4 (L-thyroxine) replacement therapy (Tx+T4)--rats were thyroidectomized at day 30 and treated daily i.m. with T4 (6 micrograms/100 g body weight/day) for 30 days from day 31 to day 60 post-thyroidectomy (age 90 days); Group 3, control--rats were sham-operated and treated with vehicle. The rats from all groups were killed on day 61 post-thyroidectomy… Show more

“…animals is in agreement with previous reports showing decreased sperm motility in hypothyroid rats (Chandrasekhar et al 1985, Kumar et al 1994. Since the reduction of swimming velocities of spermatozoa from the epididymis of these animals could be rescued by T4 injections (Del Rio et al 1998), it was assumed that TH directly acted on the epididymis since TH binding to the epididymal nuclei has been demonstrated (Del Rio et al 2000).…”

“…Our results are in agreement with previous articles that disclosed histological alterations in testes of hypothyroid men [3] and rats [10,14]. The pattern of sperm motility changes during epididymal transit.…”
