Influence of Incorporating 5% Weight Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles on Flexural Strength, Micro-Hardness, Surface Roughness and Water Sorption of Dental Self-Cured Acrylic Resin

Abstract: Background: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is used in fabricating acrylic denture bases. Repairing a fractured acrylic denture base can be done by self-cured PMMA, yet this is still a weak point after repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporating 5% weight titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2) to self-cured PMMA on flexural strength, surface micro-hardness, roughness, and water sorption. Methods: A total of 160 acrylic–resin specimens were used in this study. They were divided in two … Show more

“…Modification of dental materials, especially by the employment of inorganic fillers, led to great advancements in their properties [ 8 13 ]. The physical, mechanical, thermal, and tribological properties of the dental resin matrix are greatly improved by the addition of fibers [ 14 ].…”

“…Some reports claimed that there is direct correlation between microhardness and wear resistance [ 18 ], which is mainly due to incorporation of nano-sized filler particles to the organic matrix, providing a composite with more resistance to wear and scratching [ 19 21 ]. Despite the desired properties of PMMA, there is an ongoing demand to enhance the mechanical properties of the acrylic denture base [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…A concern about the improvement of the mechanical properties of the denture base repair materials should be expressed [ 24 ]. There have been numerous attempts to incorporate different types of fillers into PMMA-based polymers to reinforce them, such as rubbers, fibers, ceramics, and metals [ 22 , 25 29 ]. Recent studies proved that addition of short E-glass fiber improved the flexural strength of self-cured PMMA materials [ 30 ].…”
