Influence of Invisalign treatment with interproximal enamel reduction (IER) on bone volume for adult crowding: a retrospective three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography study

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study was to use three-dimensional datasets to identify associations between treatment for adult crowding using Invisalign and interproximal enamel reduction (IER) and changes in the bone volume.MethodsA total of 60 digital cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans from 30 patients (28 women, two men; 30 CBCTs pretreatment, 30 posttreatment) were examined retrospectively in order to record bone volume three-dimensionally before and after treatment. The patients’ average age was 36.03… Show more

“…The cortical bone represents the limit for orthodontic tooth movement, which should be considered especially during treatment of crowding with proclination and expansion. 3 Interproximal reduction increases the amount of space available. It also offers an attractive alternative to dental extractions as the quantity of enamel removed can be calculated to match the amount of space required for the resolution of dental crowding.…”

“…Furthermore, non-isotropic voxels could lead to lower resolution of the reconstructed images compared with original axial scans. In the1990s, tomography systems such as cone beam CT (CBCT) were introduced for the head and neck imaging to overcome the limitations of CT. 1,2 In the recent years, CBCT has been increasingly used in different fields of dentistry 3,6 with several applications in implant treatment. 7 One of the advantages of CBCT software for dentists is the possibility to make linear measurements between anatomical locations.…”
