Influence of Land-Use Type on Forest Bird Community Composition in Mount Kenya Forest

Abstract: Few studies have explored how human land uses influence and support persistence of forest biodiversity in central Kenya. In the case of the Mount Kenya ecosystem, farmlands and plantation forests are significant land-use types. Using point counts, we assessed bird communities in natural forests, plantation forests, and farmlands in the Nanyuki Forest Block, Western Mount Kenya. Bird point counts were undertaken during two sampling periods (wet and dry season). Compared to farmlands and plantation forest, natur… Show more

“…Likewise, in our study, we found that omnivorous species are mostly found in forest habitats. Similar results were shown by studies around the globe (Dario 2017;Mahiga et al 2019). Insectivorous birds are the habitat specialists and are least dispersive or residential (He et al 2019), hence are more specialized to the habitat.…”

“…This also agrees with Soderstrom et al, (2003) where generalist species were successful in human disturbed habitats but not of any conservation concern. This finding is similar to Mahiga et al, (2019) on the influence of land-use type on forest bird community composition in Mount Kenya Forest where granivore bird species were more in farmlands than any other feeding guild which was attributed to food resources FRANCIS, MJ; CHASKDA, AA; OMBUGADU, A; KARAU, SD; MATHIAS, OC; OLORI-OKE, O; YAKUBU, CK in such habitat. The Bishops in Amrum Forest Reserve were mostly recorded in the savannah grassland.…”

“…Birds are an important part of forest ecosystems and a key part of food chains that are crucial for maintaining ecosystem function and resilience (Lundberg & Moberg 2003;Mahiga et al 2019). In addition, birds play vital ecological roles in both agricultural land and forest ecosystems especially pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal (Whelan et al 2008;Mulwa et al 2012;Basnet et al 2016).…”
