Influence of light exposure at nighttime on sleep development and body growth of preterm infants

Abstract: Previous studies have demonstrated that a light-dark cycle has promoted better sleep development and weight gain in preterm infants than constant light or constant darkness. However, it was unknown whether brief light exposure at night for medical treatment and nursing care would compromise the benefits brought about by such a light-dark cycle. To examine such possibility, we developed a special red LED light with a wavelength of >675 nm which preterm infants cannot perceive. Preterm infants born at <36 weeks’… Show more

“…In the meantime, video-based analyses were performed to assess sleep quality, either visually, where video was used as a support for actigraphy measurement validation (So et al, 2005;Sung et al, 2009) or to evaluate the influence of light exposure on the sleep (Kaneshi et al, 2016), or semi-automatically, to detect the eye state in different sleep stages (Porée et al, 2015).…”

“…The circadian rhythm is of considerable interest because of its potential effects on tissue growth and development ( Kaneshi et al., 2016 ). Circadian rhythm is an endogenous rhythm that allows organisms to adapt to the light-dark cycle, temperature changes, and other environmental factors, and it plays critical roles in many physiological and behavioral processes in mammals ( Bailey et al., 2014 , Bell-Pedersen et al., 2005 ).…”

“…[28] Previous studies have demonstrated that a light dark cycle has promoted better sleep development than constant light or constant darkness. [11] Published by Sciedu Press According to respiratory response (ventilated baby), the study illustrated that there was a significant difference between control and study group (covered eyes), more than half of ventilated babies were actively breathes against ventilator or coughs regularly in the control group and half of them were spontaneous respiration on ventilator in coved eyes group. Sleep disruption is stressful to sick newborn infants in NICU and alter state regulation and physiological stability.…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that a light dark cycle has promoted better sleep development than constant light. [11] Reduced lighting may improve sleep cycles. It enables the melatonin hormone to increase during the darkness of the night and gives the patient a better chance of sleeping.…”
