Influence of loading conditions on the measurement of mode I critical stress intensity factor for wood and medium-density fiberboard by the single-edge-notched tension test

Abstract: The mode I critical stress intensity factor K Ic for wood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) was obtained by conducting the single-edge-notched tension (SENT) test, designed for isotropic materials, under various loading conditions, and performing subsequent numerical analysis on the test data. The validity of the SENT test for this purpose was examined by conducting double cantilever beam (DCB) tests and comparing test data with those of the SENT tests. The best values of K Ic are obtained by conducting the … Show more

“…A statistical analysis of the difference between the K Ic values obtained using the SENB and DCB tests shows that the difference is not signifi cant in this a/W range, regardless of whether the P c value is determined from the P-δ or P-COD relationship. This range coincides well with the range used to derive the appropriate K Ic value in the SENT test (Yoshihara 2010b). When using Eq.…”

“…An MDF panel, which was used in previous works (Yoshihara, 2010b; Yoshihara and Usuki, 2011), was investigated. The density of the MDF at 12 % moisture content (MC) was 580 ± 10 kg/m 3 .…”

“…Tests of DCB and TDCB specimens can be performed on a variety of materials without particular restrictions on the material choice, as long as the beams are not damaged or do not yield during the test. The testing methods involving these two specimen geometries have been thoroughly examined (Blackman et al 1991(Blackman et al , 2001Dourado et al 2009 ;Yoshihara 2010 ), andalso, BS 7991 (1991) and ASTM D 3433 (1999ASTM D 3433 ( /2005 standards cover the subject. These standards describe the experimental and analytical methods for the determination of the fracture resistance of adhesively bonded DCB and TDCB specimens subjected to mode I loading conditions.…”
