Influence of mental workload on muscle endurance, fatigue, and recovery during intermittent static work

Abstract: Most occupational tasks involve some level of mental/cognitive processing in addition to physical work; however, the etiology of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) due to these demands remains unclear. The aim of this study was to quantify the interactive effects of physical and mental workload on muscle endurance, fatigue, and recovery during intermittent work. Twelve participants, balanced by gender, performed intermittent static shoulder abductions to exhaustion at 15, 35, and 55% of individual … Show more

“…Alternatively, the stressor-induced fatigability may only be relevant during low-force contractions. Accordingly, cognitive demand influenced the fatigability of the shoulder abductors during a moderate intensity but not in a highintensity, intermittent contraction in young adults [18].…”

“…Fatigue is a symptom of the body not being able to sustain a given level of activity. Fatigue has a negative effect on various aspects of human life including physical strength, work performance, domesticity and social life (1,2).…”

“…During physical exercise, the contracting muscles generate force/power, metabolites, and heat, which ultimately induce fatigue and exhaustion (4). Fatigue is categorized as physical or emotional exhaustion resulting in negative effects on physical endurance capacity, work performance, and exercise intensity.…”
