“…Among the structure metal materials, magnesium alloy has been widely used in automobile industry, electronics, aerospace and other fields because of its excellent specific stiffness and specific strength, but low strength and poor corrosion resistance limit the wider application of magnesium alloy. Adding rare earth elements to pure magnesium can improve the microstructure, fine grain size and remove S, Fe and other impurities, so RE elements can effectively improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy [1][2][3]. RE element can also change the structure of corrosion film of magnesium alloy.…”

“…They also found that surface oxide films containing Mg and RE can provide desired corrosion resistance to Mg alloys. Hu et al [26] surveyed the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Mg-4Al-3Ca alloy after adding mixed Y and Ce. The results indicated that adding the mixture of Y and Ce to Mg-4Al-3Ca alloy refined the thick strip (Mg, Al) 2 Ca phase and changed the continuity of the (Mg, Al) 2 Ca phase, and the newly obtained distributed granular Al-RE phase formed a barrier layer in the matrix.…”
