Influence of MoS2, H3BO3, and MWCNT Additives on the Dry and Lubricated Sliding Tribology of AMMC–Steel Contacts

Abstract: The present study is focused on the performance evaluation of MoS2, H3BO3, and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) used as the potential oil additives in base oil for aluminum metal matrix composites (AMMC)–steel (EN31) tribocontact. Al–B4C composite is used for this purpose; based on a set of preliminary investigation under unlubricated and fresh oil lubrication, three different types of AMMCs (Al–SiC, Al–B4C, and Al–SiC–B4C) were used. A pin-on-disk tribometer is used for all the friction and wear tests under… Show more

“…These particles may be used to improve their properties also in liquid lubricants [9][10][11][12]. More related compounds include polytetrafluoroethylene (PTU), calcium fluoride (CaF), and cerium tungsten disulfide (CeW12), have the same effect [13]. The interface of MoS 2 appears to be linear with lamella directed in the direction of motion, serving as a pathway for relative motion but hindering interaction through different sliding components under varying strain [14].…”

“…Harpreet et al [13] studied the tribological effect of composites during lubrication environments such as MoS 2 molybdenum disulphide, boric acid (H3BO3) and multi-concentrational carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in paraffin SN500 oiled. The composites were Al-SiC, Al-B 4 C and Al-SiC-B 4 C. In contrast to MoS 2 , which exhibits moderate frictional improvement in performance, the compounds H3BO3 and MWCNT exhibit significant friction and wear improvement.…”

“…Adding solid lubricant particles like graphite (Gr), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) along the stiff ceramic powders in the aluminum matrix would nurture self-lubricating properties in composites and increase the wear resistance of surface composites under sliding wear conditions [36][37][38][39]. Such a modified surface layer that incorporates two or more different reinforcements to use individual characteristics of each particle categorized as hybrid surface metal matrix composites.…”

“…From the pilot studies using MoS 2 and MWCNT in SN500 oil, it was earlier noticed that MWCNT additive is more effective in controlling the friction and wear than the MoS 2 additive, in the absence of surfactant. 31 This might be because of various phenomena and features associated with MWCNTs, such as easy penetration into asperities owing to nanometric-size, better mechanical properties, thermal properties, and effortless sliding into the graphene sheets. The morphology and structure of selected of MWCNT was reported in the previous research.…”
