Influence of nitrogen oxides NO and NO2on singlet delta oxygen production in pulsed discharge

Abstract: The influence of nitrogen oxides NO and NO2 on the specific input energy (SIE) and the time behaviour of singlet delta oxygen (SDO) luminescence excited by a pulsed e-beam sustained discharge in oxygen were experimentally and theoretically studied. NO and NO2 addition into oxygen results in a small increase and decrease in the SIE, respectively, the latter being connected with a large energy of electron affinity to NO2. The addition of 0.1–0.3% nitrogen oxides was experimentally and theoretically demonstrated … Show more

“…Examination of the role of O 2 (a 1 g ) molecules in the high-voltage pulsed discharge being studied requires an understanding of the quenching rates of the species by N 2 , Ar, O 2 , O, O 3 , NO, NO 2 , H 2 , H and HO 2 . A body of literature on these rates exists, particularly in [17,19,21,31]. For example, the total rate of O 2 (a 1 g ) reaction with hydrogen is complicated by the existence of reactive and non-reactive reaction pathways.…”

“…The presence of humid air, with its significant concentration of nitrogen and water vapour creates reactive nitrogen species which are also of particular interest for the bio-medical community [17][18][19][20][21]. Hydration is significant in humid circumstances resulting in the production of a variety of positive and negative hydrated cluster ions [22][23][24].…”

“…As higher concentrations of toluene was injected into the dicharge system, more OH radicals were formed through the reactions of toluene molecules with energetic electrons, ions and free radicals. Some possible reaction pathways for toluene decompositon were proposed as follow [19,20,31,32].…”
