Influence of nonionic polymers on the rheological and electrical properties of Egyptian bentonite

Abstract: The rheological properties of Egyptian bentonite suspensions in the presence of nonionic polymers were investigated. Two different types of nonionic polymers were studied: poly(ethylene glycol) (molecular weight 5 6000 g/mol) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (molecular weight 5 40,000 g/mol). The rheological properties (plastic viscosity, apparent viscosity, and yield point) of concentrated clay suspensions (6-8% w/w) at different temperatures after 24 h were determined. As the nonionic polymer concentrations incre… Show more

“…Due to the long chains of HEC, the formation of interparticle bridging is carried out when this polymer is adsorbed onto the clay particle surface, it also favours the interactions particle-particle, and consequently, the HEC forms like a network structure together with bounded water molecules to it and adsorbed clay minerals, which increase the elastic and the loss moduli. In addition, the electrostatic repulsive and the van der Waals forces, which bring particles to an equilibrium state, yield to gel formation [42]. Güngör and Ece have obtained similar results on the polymer poly (vinyl) pyrolidine.…”

“…[12] Bentonite is also modified with PEG for application as reactive clays inhibitor additive in water-based drilling fluids. [13] A number of studies related to the influence of PEG on the rheological behavior [5,[14][15][16][17][18] and electrokinetic property [5,15,16] of bentonite have also been published. Preparation of organobentonite using nonionic surfactants and d001 spacing of organobentonite were also mentioned by Yun-Hwei Shen.…”
