Influence of Okra (Abelmoschus spp.) Accessions on Colonization by Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Their Effects on Aphid Biological Parameters

Abstract: Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the major pests of okra. Damage severity and high levels of infestation have led to widespread use of chemical insecticides. Okra is ranked fourth in Cameroon among vegetable crops on which chemical insecticides are applied. The objectives of this study were to evaluate resistant okra accessions identified in previous studies, to identify their categories of resistance, and to assess their effects on the non-preference, development, and reproduction of A. … Show more

“…On the other hand lower aphid abundance can be due to non-preference or antixenosis, where the genotypes were not preferred hosts for feeding and oviposition (Kogan and Ortman 1978;Smith 1989). However, mechanisms or categories of resistance of these genotypes have been reported to be either by tolerance or antibiosis as none of them have shown antixenotic properties (Abang et al 2016), and their antibiotic properties have been linked to plant metabolites (Abang et al 2018).…”

“…The Plant Genetic Resources Conservation Unit, Southern Regional Plant Introduction Station, University of Georgia, USDA-ARS (2971 accessions); is the biggest sector for public collections of Abelmoschus germplasm; WorldVeg currently has 1873 okra accessions, while the Agricultural Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Research Centre in Sudan follows (Scha eitner et al 2021). Several studies have been conductive with accessions from WorldVeg for resistance to pests of okra such as Aphis gossypii, a notorious okra pests (Abang et al 2014a(Abang et al , 2016(Abang et al , 2018(Abang et al , 2020. WorldVeg gene bank also offers a broader pool of okra required for a robust screening for desirable horticultural traits, yield and resistance to pests and diseases.…”
