Influence of Omega-3 Fatty Acid-Rich Fish Oils on Hyperlipidemia: Effect of Eel, Sardine, Trout, and Cod Oils on Hyperlipidemic Mice

Abstract: Dyslipidemia is one of the most important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (FAs), and especially omega-3 FAs, could significantly contribute to the management of dyslipidemia and the prevention of CVD. The anti-hyperlipidemic effect of selected fish oils (eel, sardine, trout, cod liver) was comparatively evaluated in a high fat diet (HFD)-fed mouse model. At the end of 30 days on the HFD, all animals were hyperlipidemic and were switched to a diet consisting of 90% standar… Show more

“…With their differential action on transcription factors, the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA may have independent positive effects on the cardiovascular system ( 71 ). Most studies on human and animal models investigated the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil on TAGs and lipoproteins ( 72 , 73 ). Schizochytrium sp.…”

“…Numerous strategies have been developed to control dyslipidemia, and they include changes in lifestyle, e.g., diet, physical exercise or pharmacological means [1]. However, a key role in dyslipidemia management and CVD risk prevention is attributed to nutritional factors [5], and supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is considered to be one of the most significant approaches in this range. Dietary supplements other than PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) can be used to prevent dyslipidemia or to support its treatment, and they include, for example, plant sterols or stanols, berberine, red yeast rice, garlic, resveratrol, sour tea, green tea, curcuminoids or anthocyanins [6], policosanol, niacin, tocotrienols, pantethine, gugulipids [7] and probiotics [8].…”
