Influence of orthopedic examination on lameness scores and interobserver and intraobserver agreement in dogs with naturally occurring elbow osteoarthritis

Abstract: Objective To determine the influence of orthopedic examination on numerical rating score (NRS) and visual analog score (VAS) when scoring lameness in dogs with elbow osteoarthritis (OA) and to evaluate interobserver and intraobserver agreement in NRS and VAS on the basis of video‐graphic gait analysis. Design Prospective blinded study. Animals Eighteen client‐owned dogs with radiographically confirmed elbow OA. Methods Videos were obtained for all dogs at a walk and at a trot both prior to and immediately afte… Show more

“…Inter- and intra-observer reliability of the VAS is described to score canine lameness. 32 This leads to the last limitations of this study: the subjectivity of the VAS and the non-blinded status of the evaluator in this clinical environment. Finally, a lead of improvement is to correlate the FT result with the intra-articular inflammation using a synovial analysis.…”

“…Subjective lameness scoring is described with the use of a visual analog scale. This method implies inter- and intra-observer reliability ( 31 ). The absence of objective gait analysis methods (such as force plate or pressure sensitive walkway) before and after performing the FT can represent a lack of objective lameness measurements ( 32 ).…”

“…Signalment data including age, gender, body weight, body condition score (BCS, 5-point system) and lameness score (numerical rating score) for all subject dogs were collected from the medical record. 10 11 This study was approved by the clinical research and trial ethics committee, Animal Medical Center of Nihon University (ANMEC-3–007). In the control group, all owners requested whole body screening for the purpose of a supplement to physical examination using CT without anaesthesia or sedation and consented to the collection of data for this study.…”
