Influence of Oxadiazon on Peanuts and Weeds1

Abstract: Oxadiazon [2-tert-buty1-4-(2, 4-dichloro-5-Isopropoxyphenyl)-~2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] was applied alone as a preemergence treatment and in combination with dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol) as a crackingtime treatment to peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.). During the years 1970 to 1972 the experimental area was heavily infested with a mixed population of annual grass and broadleaf weeds. During the years 1973 to 1975, the predominant species present were sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L.) and Florida beggar… Show more

“…Weed control in peanuts in past years has been based upon programs that utilize mechanical cultivation, handhoeing or pulling, and herbicides. Reliance exclusively upon crop rotation and mechanical weed control ended in the early 1950's as selective herbicides began to appear for use in peanuts (3,11,13,14). The use of dinoseb (6,10,15) alone or in combination with naptalam (N-l-naphthylphthalamic acid) (16) began in the late 1950's.…”

“…Peanut weed control in earlier years relied heavily on cultivation, hand-hoeing or pulling. Selective herbicides began to be used in the 1950's (5,18,19,20). Dinoseb As new compounds were introduced, peanut producers began to rely more heavily on herbicides.…”

“…Many researchers estimated yield losses in this crop due to weed competition by at least 50% in Libya (Orman1961), and up to 70%in Sudan (Drennan and Jennings, 1977) and 90% in Egypt (Fayed et al, 1990). This competition lie mainly in the 15-60 days after sowing peanut and the maximum was around 45 days after sowing (Yadav et al, 1984).Hand weeding is often more expensive justified by the value of crop (Buchanan et al, 1977). For these reasons it is very important to control weeds mechanically or chemically by herbicides.…”
