Influence of Perceptual Range on Human Perceived Restoration

Abstract: In daily living environments, an individual’s different state of mind influences their spatial perception. The current study, based on Attention Restoration Theory, aimed to explore differences in the health utility of nature according to individual differences in spatial perception. It focused on Cheonggyecheon stream in Seoul, South Korea. Cognitive mapping and the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS) were used to assess two groups’ different perceived spatial ranges and the restorative effect of the enviro… Show more

“…Therefore, Davenport [7] built a complete network of river meanings through in-depth interviews. Kim and Moohan [8] studied the relationship between different ranges of perceived space of the rivers and the restoration effect of the environment. Kelly and Deborah [9] studied the level of specialisation among white-water recreationalists and their attachment to a popular white-water recreation river in the United States.…”

“…Although grounded in the foundation of multisensory experiences and ART, understanding an environment that enables visitors to perceive a restorative quality through their senses and derive satisfaction holds importance in forest recreation marketing and environmental management. However, past studies on the association between sensorial dimensions and perceived restorativeness have conducted experiments and surveys using off-site simulations (images, recorded sounds, or other experimental settings) [ 35 ]. Few studies have investigated the association between perceived restorativeness and sight, hearing, smell, and touch on site; moreover, few studies have focused on the effect of perceived restorativeness on satisfaction.…”
